What is all this talk admonishing Israel about not killing civilians and being disproportionate in its response to Hamas?
Let’s remember that toward the end of World War II, the United States and England destroyed the city of Dresden by dropping 2,431 tons of high explosive bombs and almost 1,500 tons of incendiaries. This was a city where most of its citizens were civilians and no threat to the Allies.
And what about Hiroshima and Nagasaki, where more than 150,000 civilians were killed instantly and others suffered all their lives from the radiation? Proportionate responses? This was war, and the allies had to send a clear message to the enemy to never think of starting a war again.
No one should apply a double standard to Israel. Hamas leaders are cowards. They sit in Qatar in five-star hotels and tell their followers to hide behind civilians. But Israel has to be careful in how it kills the enemy to avoid civilians who are used as human shields.
