On behalf of all those who live within 10 minutes to 15 minutes from Miami International Airport, a heartfelt thank-you to the Miami-Dade County Commission for hopefully reforming the existing regulations that allow only 'sanctioned cab and limousine' companies to provide commercial transportation from MIA (Commissioners give initial OK to legalizing Lyft, UberX in Miami-Dade, July 16).
There's another word for the existing law that protects the cabs and limousine industries from competition — it's called a monopoly. For so many decades I have endured taxi cab drivers that display nasty attitudes because they're taking me on a short fare to my home, instead of to Fort Lauderdale or Miami Beach.
Some will not accept credit card payment because the fare just isn't big enough. It's not that I don't feel for their situation, but don't take your short fare woes out on your customers. First impressions in our city may very well be from the cab driver who transports out-of-town visitors to The Biltmore or other Coral Gables/Coconut Grove hotels.
It's distressing to know that the local cab companies haven't done a thing to improve this dismal situation, because they really haven't had to. Now, the prospect of competition may force these cab companies to up their game. Hooray for Lyft and Uber! These companies are welcome additions to our community. They only accept credit cards, and the gratuity is already included in their price.
