Terry Murphy’s July 11 column, Tax rate plus higher values equal tax increase, is right on. However, it leaves out any consideration as to why Miami-Dade County commissioners have their heads in the sand hiding from such an increase.
Miami-Dade residents have enjoyed a flat tax for a number of years. Regardless of union demands, we have a county government that must preserve and provide services. Mayor Carlos Giménez must look to reduce that tax break that covers valuable commercial, industrial and non-homesteaded properties. Whatever they do, our elected leaders must stop worrying about reelection because of what happened in the past.
