Re the June 18 letter Keep national park open: The mission of the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) “is to conserve the scenery, the natural and historic objects, and the wildlife in U.S. national parks and to provide for the public’s enjoyment of these features in a manner that will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.” Nowhere is the word “harvest” mentioned.
If the NPS decides that the mini lobster season/commercial fishing must be eliminated in Biscayne National Park for the preservation of the park’s natural resources, then the mission statement mandates that this be done for the benefit of all citizens and visitors now and in the future.
