Team USA got cocky

While reading the excellent coverage by the Miami Herald’s Michelle Kaufman of the USA-Portugal Sunday World Cup game, I couldn’t help noticing that even internationally known Chelsea coach and Yahoo’s World Cup Sport commentator Jose Mourinho felt that Team USA let Portugal tie the game in the final seconds because of their inexperience.
In my opinion, Team USA Coach Jurgen Klinsmann should have known better. Coach Klinsmann and our team were just too overconfident.
With a 2-1 lead, they just stopped playing and began waiting for the referee to blow his whistle to signal the end of the game. Big mistake.
The last 10 minutes of any soccer game are the most dangerous, especially during any World Cup competition.
I trust Coach Klinsmann and our Team USA learned their lesson and next time continue to give 100 percent until after the whistle is blown. Still, it was an exciting and unforgettable game.
It really broke our hearts that they tied. Let’s do better Thursday. And I thank Ms. Kaufman for her great coverage of the World Cup.
