From the Editor: The Herald is serving up an extra helping of food coverage

South Florida has a love affair with food.
Whether we are gathering around the table for a home-cooked meal or enjoying the offerings at a newly opened restaurant, the tradition of great food as a convener runs deep in our community.
“We have so many cultures and ethnicities and that’s part of what makes Miami such a great food city,” said Kendall Hamersly, senior features editor.
To satisfy both the home cook and the avid diner, Hamersly and Miami Herald Food Editor Evan Benn teamed up to give readers an extra helping of food content.
On Thursdays, we have expanded our popular cooking section. Along with our current reader favorites, we’ve added new features on technique, product taste tests and a guide to unusual ingredients.
Our revamped Saturday section is geared to help readers make the most of their weekends, with a focus on exploring our growing culinary scene. Look for restaurant reviews, guides on great local ethnic food and recommendations for wine, beer and cocktails. Other features include entertainment previews, neighborhood day trips, shopping and outdoors and recreation coverage.
“I want to engage the super foodies and the home cooks,” Benn said. “We are giving both of them more of what they love.”

Benn, a craft beer aficionado, has been writing a weekly feature. Now, he has launched a companion video show, Brew in Miami, which posts weekly on Thursday mornings on Miami.com. The shows feature local chefs, brewers, distributors and bloggers — and Benn’s recommendation for a great craft beer.
To all of his coverage, Benn brings his own passion for food.
“I like to cook at home and I love to go out and try new restaurants,” Benn said. “There is a lot of food coverage in Miami. But our job is to curate it and keep it fresh.”
