This central district spreads north from Miami Gardens to beyond Fort Pierce. U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, a Democrat, is in his ninth term. His challenger is Republican Bernard Sansaricq, once the president of Haiti's senate.
Mr. Sansaricq fought the Duvalier regime, which killed 13 members of his family in 1964. He was educated in the United States and returned here in 1994 after tangling with former Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
Our choice is Mr. Hastings. In 2006, Mr. Hastings could see the makings of the coming mortgage/housing meltdown in his district and rang the alarm. To provide some relief for beleaguered homeowners he is seeking to convince fellow lawmakers to allow judges to modify mortgages in bankruptcy.
Mr. Hastings also wants a comprehensive national policy to expand renewable energy sources and reduce fossil-fuel use. For U.S. House, District 23, The Miami Herald recommends ALCEE HASTINGS.
