Phillips to challenge Jamaica PNP leader Portia

Peter vs. Portia round two. Disappointed by the leadership of the opposition People's National Party leader Portia Simpson-Miller, Jamaica's former national security minister, Peter Phillips, is seeking to unseat her.

Phillips announced he will challenge Simpson-Miller at September's PNP convention. It is the first time in the party's history that a sitting leader has been challenged for leadership of the party.

The two previously battled it out in a divisive leadership showdown in 2006 after former Jamaica Prime Minister P.J. Patterson announced his early retirement from politics and the party's helm.

Phillips lost that round, and Portia went on to become the country's first female prime minister. She served in the post for 18 months before the PNP was defeated at the polls in September's general elections by current Prime Minister Bruce Golding, head of the Jamaica Labor Party.
