A concern only for ships and sea life, Hurricane Fred remained adrift in the far-off Atlantic on Thursday.

The storm was slowly weakening from its Wednesday peak as a Category 3 storm and the National Hurricane Center expected that trend to continue over the next several days. By Tuesday, Fred could fizzle into a remnant, destroyed by the combined impacts of wind shear, cooler sea temperatures and dry air.

At 11 a.m., Fred's winds were clocked at 100 mph, down from the peak of 120 mph the previous day. It was moving northwest at 7 mph, some 3,000 miles from Miami, and could slow even further over the next few days.
