Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico early on September 20, bringing extreme wind and rain to the region, local media reported. The National Hurricane Center warned that Maria would hit the southeastern Puerto Rico after passing over the Caribbean island of St Croix. A hurricane warning also remained in effect for the Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic.
A little more than a week after Hurricane Irma slashed through the Caribbean and glanced southeast Florida with hurricane-force gusts, Hurricane Maria is sweeping through the northeast Caribbean Sea dealing some islands a second blow.
Officials in Guadeloupe said the French island would probably experience heavy flooding on Tuesday, as Hurricane Maria threatened Caribbean islands already ravaged by Hurricane Irma. Video emerged from the airport in Pointe-à-Pitre showing high winds from the monster storm's approach.
Hurricane Maria weakened slightly early Tuesday to a Category 4 storm after making landfall on Dominica, slashing the small Caribbean island with wind and rain and heading toward the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, already battered by Irma.

Hurricane Maria has regained Category 5 strength overnight into Tuesday. Officials in the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe said the French island near Dominica probably would experience heavy flooding and warned that many communities could be submerged. The storm was located early Tuesday about 65 miles west-southwest of Guadeloupe.
