CAMPAIGN 2008 | CONGRESS

Local congressional races are close

lclark@MiamiHerald.com

A new poll suggests an increasingly competitive race for Congress in South Florida, with none of the Republican incumbents polling above 50 percent.

The survey, conducted for WSCV Telemundo 51, shows two of the Democratic challengers -- former Hialeah Mayor Raul Martinez and former Miami-Dade Democratic party chief Joe Garcia -- coming within 5 points of the incumbents.

According to the poll, Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart leads Martinez 48 to 43 percent, with 9 percent of those questioned undecided. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart leads Garcia 43-41 percent, with 16 percent undecided.

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen has a more comfortable margin against challenger Annette Taddeo, but her numbers too were below 50 percent -- 48 to 35 percent, with 17 percent undecided.

The Taddeo campaign released the numbers in the race, which will be broadcast by the station Tuesday evening.

The survey, conducted by pollster Carlos McDonald, interviewed 300 registered voters in each district.

The survey carries a margin of error of plus or minus five percentage points.
