Haitian President René Préval to thank Broward School Board for aid
Haitian President René Préval made the rounds last month seeking help for his storm-damaged country.
Now, his representatives said he plans to return to South Florida to thank the Broward School Board for its offer of hundreds of portable classrooms.
The date hasn't been confirmed, but Broward Schools Superintendent Jim Notter said the visit will coincide with the board's vote on an official agreement at a meeting in December.
In the meantime, school district and Haiti officials are working on details of how many portables to ship, how exactly to get them there and how they'll be set up once they arrive.
The district has 600 old portable classrooms that it no longer needs and would otherwise have to pay to dispose of. Notter said the classrooms that are donated will likely end up used for medical care facilities and schools.
Since Broward's offer, other districts -- including Miami-Dade, Martin and Palm Beach counties -- have also lent a hand to the efforts.
