Biden, Palin plan Florida visits

breinhard@MiamiHerald.com

Just days after meeting in their first and only televised debate, Democrat Joe Biden and Republican Sarah Palin will both hit the campaign trail in Florida this week.

Palin will appear at rallies Monday in Clearwater and Estero. Then she heads north to Jacksonville and Pensacola. The campaign said two of the events were moved to larger venues because of the high demand for tickets to see the Alaska governor, who burst onto the national stage one month ago when Republican presidential John McCain chose her for the ticket.

In between her public appearances, Palin will attend private fundraisers in Naples, Boca Raton and Jacksonville.

Biden, a longtime senator from Delaware, will be in Tampa on Wednesday. He'll also attend a private fundraiser in Naples. He had been scheduled for a campaign stop in Melbourne and Lakeland on Tuesday but canceled the events when his wife's mother, Bonny Jean Jacobs, died Sunday after a long illness.

The visits by the vice presidential contenders come as polls show the Democratic ticket headed by Barack Obama gaining ground in the nation's largest battleground state.
