Missing 'for' costs Broward Commission hopefuls

nmcneal@MiamiHerald.com

The Florida Election Commission has fined two Broward County Commission candidates for misrepresenting themselves.

County Commissioner Josephus Eggelletion filed the complaint against two challengers, Lauderdale Lakes Commissioner John Billingsley and Rev. Allen B. Jackson, for not using the word ''for'' between their names and ''County Commissioner'' in campaign ads.

By leaving out the three-letter word, the opponents have portrayed themselves as incumbents, Eggelletion said.

The commission agreed and fined Billingsley $100 and Jackson $200. Billingsley and Jackson are running for a seat on the Broward County Commission from District 9.

Two other candidates, Dale Holness, a Democrat, and Collin Robinson, a write-in candidate, also are running.

Eggelletion, a former teacher, was elected to the seat in 2000. The district includes portions of Fort Lauderdale, Lauderdale Lakes, Lauderhill, North Lauderdale, Oakland Park, Pompano Beach, Wilton Manors, Sunrise, Tamarac and Plantation.

The district was created to ensure that a minority could win a commission seat.

''These are individuals who go around talking about honesty and integrity, but if you are going to talk the talk, you have to walk the walk,'' Eggelletion said.

Billingsley said the omission was an oversight. His printer used the same logo when he was an incumbent running for Lauderdale Lakes City Commission, he said. The printer simply switched out Lauderdale Lakes with the word ''Broward''. Jackson said that Eggelletion is trying to create obstacles.
