The Republican Party of Florida demanded and received an apology from NBC 6 South Florida (WTVJ) and a Tallahassee-based television news service after the station aired a graphic earlier this week that referred to the party as the “Reprehensive Party of Florida.”
RPOF Chairman Lenny Curry wrote the television station management Friday complaining about how the name was used while the station showed images of a GOP political ad during a story about the Florida gubernatorial race that aired on Thursday.
NBC 6 South Florida apologized in a written statement and issued an on-air apology during Friday evening’s newscast.
Said NBC in a statement: “We apologize to the Republican Party of Florida and to our viewers for our airing of a wrong graphic in a news story in (Thursday) night’s 6 p.m. newscast.
“The story came to us from a news service we use out of Tallahassee that we have relied on for years with no issues. We do, however, know it was our responsibility to catch the graphic and we regret that we did not prevent it from airing.
Mike Vasilinda, of Capitol News Service, also apologized to the party and said his Tallahassee-based news production company was responsible for the error. He said an employee made the mistake while transcribing handwritten notes and was fired after the error was discovered.
“The person responsible for this has been fired,” he said. “We take this very seriously.”
