A local land-use lawyer has offered a “friendly challenge” to Miami Beach preservationist Michael Kinerk.
Kinerk, of the Miami Design Preservation League, recently applied to designate an 88-year-old Star Island mansion as historic.
The application was made against the homeowners’ will. It has set off a battle of preservation versus private-property rights; the celebrity owners want to knock the mansion down. But Leonard and Lisa Hochstein — he a plastic surgeon known as “The Boob God,” and she a cast member of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Miami — would be prohibited from doing so by a historic designation.
Kinerk lives in an 80-year old home on Pinetree Drive, according to property records. But attorney Michael Larkin, the Hochsteins’ attorney, said last week that Kinerk has never applied to have his home designated historic.
“So I am issuing Michael a friendly challenge,” Larkin told the city’s Historic Preservation Board, calling for Kinerk to file an application for his own home. “If Michael does not file the application...you all have to ask yourselves why he chose not to do so.”
He added: “Rather than making an example of a family like the Hochsteins, you should lead by example.”
Reached by phone, Kinerk said that he has been out of the country and was unaware of the wager offer. and therefore declined to comment.
