For sale: The Internet domain name CityOfMiamiBeach.net.
Interested buyers should contact Miami Beach Commissioner Deede Weithorn’s husband, Mark.
Mark Weithorn — who unsuccessfully ran for state House District 113 last year — wrote in an email to The Miami Herald that he is brokering the sale of the website name on behalf of a client.
“If the city wanted to buy it, I would recuse myself and have them work directly with the owner of the domain name. I would also forgo any commissions,” he wrote.
His recusal would be a smart move, because Miami-Dade’s ethics code prohibits elected officials or their family members from entering into business contracts with the city they represent. Miami Beach has similar rules.
The auction price of CityOfMiamiBeach.net starts at $5,000.
City Attorney Jose Smith said his office “has been asked to look at all legal issues associated with the ownership and use of the domain name.”
A Web search shows that the domain names CityOfMiamiBeach.com and CityofMiamiBeach.org are also registered to owners, who didn’t return calls.
Miami Beach spokeswoman Nannette Rodriguez said that the city owns several domain names in addition to its official website, MiamiBeachFL.gov. The city also owns miamibeachfl.com , which redirects to the official page, and other domain names corresponding to specific city events, facilities or initiatives.
