Broad Prize in Urban Education finalists

Five districts are finalists for this year's Broad Prize in Urban Education, which honors the largest school districts in the country for their work in closing the performance gap between white and minority students.

One will be named the winner at a ceremony in New York on Tuesday. The prize comes with $1 million in scholarships for students in the winning district and $250,000 for students in the four finalists' districts.

• Aldine Independent School District, Texas: Third-time finalist; 60,952 students; 3 percent white; 29 percent black; 65 percent Hispanic; 82 percent low-income.

• Broward County Public Schools: First-time finalist; 255,738 students; 30.4 percent white; 38 percent black; 26 percent Hispanic; 48 percent low-income.

• Brownsville Independent School District, Texas: First-time finalist; 48,858 students; 98 percent Hispanic; 94 percent low-income.

• Long Beach Unified School District, Calif.: 2003 winner; fourth-time finalist; 88,186 students; 16 percent white; 18 percent black; 51 percent Hispanic; 69 percent low-income.

• Miami-Dade Public Schools: Third-time finalist; 339,448 students; 9 percent white; 26 percent black; 62 percent Hispanic; 64 percent low-income.
