Broward School Board action
At Tuesday's meeting, the School Board:
Tentatively approved tightening its policies to prohibit lobbyists from working in the school district for up to two years if they violate certain rules, like not disclosing conflicts of interest or contacting board members about open bids.
The board will also more broadly define lobbyists to include people who don't get paid to lobby -- like CEOs -- but still try to influence decisions for a company's economic gain.
Awarded Balfour Beatty Construction a $6.14 million contract to build a sports complex at Blanche Ely High School.
Granted attorney Ed Marko a one-year contract extension.
Also, the board tentatively approved changes to magnet programs:
A K-8 under construction will be a Montessori magnet.
The International Baccalaureate preparatory track will come to: A.C. Perry Elementary, Norcrest Elementary, Margate Middle and Silver Lakes Middle. Plantation Middle will turn its Center for Literary Arts into an IB track.
Four in-boundary magnets will turn into magnets open to students from the entire district: Markham and Palmview elementaries and Thurgood Marshall and Arthur Ashe middles.
Four in-boundary magnets -- at Country Hills and Eagle Ridge elementaries, Lyons Creek Middle and Sawgrass Springs Middle -- will turn into ``innovative programs'' that will likely receive less funding.
Lauderhill Middle will get a pre-medical/wellness track, Apollo Middle will offer an aeronautical science program and Coconut Creek High will have a global academy of environmental research and design.
