Election Day near for Hialeah voters

Hialeah voters will head to the polls Tuesday to elect a mayor and two council members.

Below is a brief look at the candidates up for election this year:

For the mayoral post, incumbent Julio Robaina, who served on the city council since 1997 and as its president for five years, will defend the seat he won in 2005 after defeating five candidates with nearly 60 percent of the vote.

He faces opposition from physician Santiago Cardenas, who lost the race in 2005.

In the Group 5 contest, incumbent Luis Gonzalez, a print shop owner and former member of the city's planning and zoning board, faces longtime community activist Fernando Alvarez, who lost a 2007 race against Jose Yedra, one of the council's longest serving members.

Gonzalez has been on the council since 2005 when he beat paramedic Roly More, the grandson of Cuban folk legend Beny More.

In Group 7, councilwoman Katharine Cue is vying for the seat she was appointed to in November when council members were forced to replace Esteban ``Steve'' Bovo, who was elected last fall to the state House of Representatives.

She faces Daniel Bolaños, a former Hialeah police officer and the son of Hialeah's former longtime police chief Rolando Bolaños Sr.

Bolaños is currently working as a fraud prevention officer for Hialeah Housing Authority.
