SUNNY ISLES BEACH

Red-light cameras go into effect

mhood@MiamiHerald.com

The 30-day grace period for red-light enforcement cameras in Sunny Isles Beach ended last week.

Drivers will now be fined $125 for the first infraction, $250 for the second and $500 for any infraction after that.

The cameras, which were installed last month, are located southbound on Collins Avenue and 172nd Street and northbound on Collins Avenue and 174th Street.

Drivers caught on camera will not be assessed points on their licenses. The photographs will be reviewed by Sunny Isles Beach police officers for accuracy before penalties are imposed.

City Manager Rick Conner said he hopes the red-light enforcement cameras will help curb a growing problem.

``Sadly, we see a lot of people not stopping,'' he said. ``We have so many pedestrians in our area, and if you don't get people to stop, it just becomes a disaster.''

Conner said the city will split the proceeds from the tickets with the contractor, American Traffic Systems.

``But I hope we don't make a penny because that means people are stopping and no longer running red lights,'' he said.
