A 24-year-old man was arrested after detectives said he hit and killed his girlfriend's infant, Miami-Dade police said Thursday.
Watson J. Dorval was booked into the Miami-Dade County Jail early Thursday and charged with second-degree murder.
Miami-Dade police were called to his girlfriend's house in the 1300 block of Northwest 77th Terrace on Tuesday afternoon because 6-month-old Jazira Darien had trouble breathing.
Paramedics rushed Jazira to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Another child was hospitalized in stable condition. An autopsy revealed Jazira died of blunt trauma, according to Miami-Dade Detective Jessica Alvarez's arrest report.
The boy's mother, Sabrina Darien, 29, had left her son alone with Dorval, who is not Jazira's father.
Jazira's death came the same day that police, in an unrelated case, arrested a Miami man accused of beating a 9-month-old boy so hard that the child suffered a lacerated liver, bruised kidney and bruises to the back.
Anthony Hall, 20, was charged with aggravated child abuse.
Miami detectives said he had been baby-sitting his girlfriend's son last month at his Allapattah apartment.
