LIBERAL ARTS COLLEGES

Elite schools provide full scholarships for Dade students

Similar stories:

Two top-ranked liberal arts colleges have signed onto a program that gives student leaders from Miami-Dade County full college scholarships.

Hamilton College in New York and Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts will accept 10 seniors apiece from Miami-Dade's public high schools.

The students will receive academic support, leadership training, mentoring -- and a full ride.

The scholarships come from a new partnership between the school district and the Posse Foundation, which connects student leaders from diverse backgrounds to elite colleges.

The foundation typically seeks ambitious teenagers who are leaders in their school community -- not necessarily those who have perfect GPAs.

This is the first year Posse has recruited students from South Florida.

Ten students from Miami-Dade high schools will also be attending the University of Pennsylvania.
