More than 60 scholarships available through The Fair

There are college scholarships up for grabs — more than $100,000 worth — and every graduating senior in Miami- Dade County looking to further his/her education at an accredited college, university or trade school in the 2010-11 academic year is eligible to apply. The scholarships, to be offered by the Miami-Dade County Fair, are part of The Fair’s annual scholarship program and will be offered this spring to outstanding Miami-Dade County seniors.

Graduating seniors who want to apply have until Mar. 16 to submit their applications. Unless the student is home schooled, applications must be submitted by the school.

Booker T. Class of 1957 keeps on giving

C hristmas is a time for giving. Traditionally organizations give toys to children and food to families. Overtown's Booker T. Washington Senior High School Class of 1957 gives gifts through its foundation with scholarships to 13 students attending seven institutions.

This holiday season, in addition to wrapping presents, members of Booker T.'s class of 1957 are administering scholarships already awarded and preparing to identify recipients for the coming year.

At their 45th reunion, the class created a foundation solely for the purpose of giving scholarships annually to graduating seniors exclusively at BTW. The annual contributions received by the foundation has tripled. Funding comes primarily from class members, private and corporate donors.

New program lets high school students take classes at FIU

The Miami-Dade school system has a new option for high schoolers looking to rack up college credits.

The Academy for Advanced Academics will allow juniors and seniors from five Miami-Dade high schools to take classes at Florida International University.

By the time the teens graduate from high school, they'll have completed up to two full years of college.

Miami Beach pianist offers piano scholarship

Bernice Sir has a passion for the piano and helping others.

She spent years working in the community as the director of the Miami Beach recreation center, where she taught piano to countless kids.

Now retired, she performs weekly at a home for senior citizens and teaches lessons out of her Miami Beach home.

Broward may take top education prize

Broward public schools will find out this week if they have edged out school districts from across the country to win a competition that has been dubbed the Nobel Prize for public education.

The Broad Prize for Urban Education (Broad rhymes with road) will be announced in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday. The winner will come home with $1 million in student scholarships.

Even if Broward doesn't win, the school district -- and the other four nominees -- will receive $250,000 for showing consistent improvement in reading and math skills among poor and minority students.
