Two Miami business people convicted in a Medicare racket of submitting almost $52 million in phony claims for HIV services will face lengthy sentences after their convictions Friday.

A jury found Scarlet Duarte and Rechart Garcia guilty of various charges of conspiracy, healthcare fraud and money laundering. They operated six clinics in Miami-Dade and Collier counties.

Their clinics were paid more than $21 million for HIV infusion treatments that were not provided to patients, according to the U.S. attorney's office in Miami.

The operators paid kickbacks to Medicare patients who pretended to receive the services and transferred government payments to shell corporations to launder the money, prosecutors said.

They face terms of five to 20 years in prison. Sentencing is set for Dec. 14.
