Miami police said Saturday they were a step closer to catching the man who fired an assault rifle at a patrol car earlier in the weekend.

Just hours after a Miami police officer was attacked during a traffic stop in Liberty City, police arrested the owner of the car involved in the crime. But the shooter himself was still at large Saturday afternoon, and detectives say they need anyone with information to come forward.

The yet-unidentified Miami police officer was not hurt when bullets punched into his marked cruiser at 9:05 p.m. Friday after he pulled over a black Pontiac Grand Prix in Liberty City.

According to a police report, the officer pulled over the Pontiac after he noticed the car had a broken headlight. But as they stopped at the intersection of Miami Avenue and Northwest 56th Street, a passenger inside the Pontiac burst out of the car -- assault rifle in hand -- and fired in the cop's direction, police said.

The officer ducked and shot back, and the driver and shooter got away -- but police used the car's tag to track it down later that night.

Sabian Thomas Godfrey, 18, was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder and being an accessory to that crime. Police said they saw him park his Pontiac -- which bore the same tag as the one that sped away -- at his North Dade home on the 1100 block of Northwest 199 Street.

Police said Godfrey then put a tarp over his car and ran into his home. On the car's hood, police said, they found bullet casings that matched those left back at the crime scene.

According to police, Godfrey denied any involvement in the incident when he was arrested at 4 a.m.

Detectives are still searching for the shooter, who was deemed ``armed and dangerous,'' according to department spokeswoman Kenia Alfonso.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Miami Police Department's Homicide Unit at 305-603-6350 or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers 305-471-8477.
