MIAMI BEACH

Miami Beach again bars alcohol at strip club

dsmiley@MiamiHerald.com

Club Madonna patrons can forget about enjoying a little ``Sex on the Beach'' with their lap dance -- for now.

A measure that would have allowed the Washington Avenue strip club to sell alcohol was unanimously shot down by the Miami Beach City Commission on Wednesday. But club owner Leroy Griffith, who during the meeting accused the city of extortion, didn't rule out another attempt in what has been a rocky, years-long battle to overturn the city's laws banning alcohol sales in ``gentlemen's clubs.'' ``We're not saying we won't'' try again, said Griffith's attorney, Daniel Aaronson.

Club Madonna's fight with the city began in the 1990s and has drawn both Griffith and the city through two lawsuits, the latter of which was recently settled on the basis that the city would once again consider and vote on a measure allowing alcohol at nude establishments.

Griffith also filed a 2004 libel suit against Jane Gross, wife of Commissioner Saul Gross, after she spoke against alcohol at strip clubs when the commission voted down a similar measure that year.

The city's handling of that suit led to an investigation by the Miami-Dade County Ethics Commission into whether commissioners tried to strong-arm Griffith into paying Gross' legal fees. The Ethics Commission eventually dropped its investigation.

History aside, Vice Mayor Victor Diaz said he voted against the measure Wednesday because it would have created a monopoly for Club Madonna and did not address regulations and operations to his satisfaction. Aaronson said after the meeting that he would speak with city administrators about bringing back another, amended measure.
