WYNWOOD

Nonprofit supports emerging artists in upcoming Wynwood show

Danny Brody and his wife Alexandra Rangel decided almost 10 years ago that they wanted to help rising artists show their work.

They founded Artoconecto in Washington -- but Saturday marks their organization's first Miami show.

''We nurture the local art scene and are a conduit for such artists,'' Rangel said recently. ``In Miami we want to establish ourselves as a nonprofit that is an umbrella supporting and connecting communities within the arts.''

Brody and Rangel are teaming up with the Bakehouse Art Complex for their first Miami event: A-B(o)MB, which stands for Art Basel (of) Miami Beach. The event coincides with this month's Gallery Walk.

On Saturday, 39 emerging artists from around the country and as far away as Israel and Poland will show off their work at the Bakehouse, 561 NW 32nd St., in Wynwood. The works will be judged by a panel including Rangel, Claire Breukel, director of the Locust Projects art center, and artists Jen Stark and Byron Peck.

Artists who land the Jury Prize will get to show off their winning works at the Bakehouse during Art Basel Miami Beach. Over the past six years, Miami's version of Basel has become a must-see stop on the international art circuit.

The Mad Cat Theatre Company, also based in Wynwood, will entertain show guests by acting out scenes from their latest production, Mixtape. A-B(o)MB will begin at 8 p.m.
