SCHENLEY PARK
Schenley Park Crime Watch and Miami-Dade police unite for neighborhood event
The residents of Schenley Park may have been divided over the planned expansion of Miami Children's Hospital, but they are united when they present their signature events.
One of those times will be Tuesday when the Schenley Park Crime Watch and the Miami-Dade Police Department present the annual Building Safer Communities neighborhood event -- formerly known as National Night Out.
The event intends to raise awareness and support for police and community anti-crime efforts.
Festivities will feature a parade led by local Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops, McGruff the Crime Dog, child safety fingerprinting, and prizes for the best decorated wagon and/or bicycle. A police helicopter and mobile crime lab will be on display.
Residents will also get a chance to meet their Miami-Dade neighborhood patrol officers.
Other activities will include the presentation of the Leo Yount Award, named in memory of a longtime and active supporter of the neighborhood and given to a resident who has displayed outstanding efforts in preventing crime and improving the neighborhood.
The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at 6044 SW 33rd St.
Building Safer Communities is in its 22nd year and is sponsored by the Crime Watch of Miami-Dade County. More than 10,000 communities and 34 million people participate in the United States, Canada and other locations.
