Girls between the ages of 12 and 18, from all around Miami-Dade County, are invited to start a new year of community service by joining the Coral Gables Juniorettes.
The next meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Oct. 15 at the clubhouse of the GFWC Coral Gables Woman's Club, 1001-1009 E. Ponce de Leon Blvd. Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of every month. For more, call Linda Hartwell at 786-202-0329 or visit geocities.com/coralgablesjuniorettes/.
The group will host a guest speaker with information about the upcoming Alliance for Lupus Research walk Nov. 2. Teen volunteers will also start making boxes for Operation Christmas Child, a worldwide outreach program that brings toys, school supplies, candy and other gifts to sick and needy children.
At the September meeting, the Juniorettes helped fill bags of school supplies for the children at Tucker Elementary School. The school has been helped for many years by the Woman's Club. Each year, members sponsor a prom party for fifth-graders before graduation in the spring.
The Woman's Club also held its first meeting of the year at a wine and cheese party to welcome prospective new members. The New Member Chairwoman is Debi Wilborn.
Past President Barbara Lapsely gave guests a tour of the Club's free children's dental clinic located on the south side of the clubhouse. Among those attending were Susie Tilson, Nancy Desmangles, Debra Adams, Sandra Gonzalez, Claire Frances Whitehurst, MayScull Brown, Jo Burke, Maria Gonzalez, Michele Collier and Mrs. Miami International Mireya Kilmon. Kilmon just competed in the Mrs. Florida International Pageant and made it to the Top 5.
Women who would like to serve the community with this motivated group of women are encouraged to contact Wilborn at the2coolgirls@aol.com.
BAPTIST BALL
Nostalgia, glitter and rock 'n' roll are planned for the 30th anniversary of the annual Baptist Hospital Ball starting at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 22, at the Doral Golf & Resort Spa. This year's theme of 'Rock N' Royalty,'' will celebrate the milestone event. It will be the first informal ''jeans and jewels'' gala affair for Baptist Hospital.
The evening will feature two Baptist Hospital physician-led bands. Ziffer 6, a band fronted by Dr. Jack Ziffer, will play covers of classic '70s and '80s rock 'n' roll tunes. The Healers, headed by Dr. Raul Valor, will entertain the crowd until midnight with Latin rock and fusion music.
Dr. Jack and Hope Ziffer, and Tom and Leslie Murphy are the volunteer co-chairs for the fundraiser. Proceeds will support Baptist Hospital's Department of Radiology. To continue its excellence in the field, Baptist's Radiology Department is making the acquisition of new technology a priority.
Ticket price for a Royal Table is $10,000. A Rock 'N' Roll Table is $6,000. All tables seat 10 people. Individual tickets are available for $500 each. Other special tables are available. For more, call Lori Elsbree at 786-596-8954.
