A Coral Gables street sweeper was ticketed this week in a September accident that critically injured a University of Miami student.

Police found no criminal negligence in the Sept. 11 accident in the 4000 block of Aurora Street.

``It was just a horrific accident,'' Coral Gables Police Chief Richard Naue said.

Police say Jose L. Santiesteban, 44, of Miami was driving a city street sweeper about 1 a.m. when he hit UM student Bianca Milov as she crossed Aurora Street in the crosswalk.

Milov, 20, of Livingston, N.J., was taken to the Ryder Trauma Center, where she remains.

According to the police report, Santiesteban had turned off Altara Avenue and was heading north on Aurora when he struck Milov, who got trapped underneath the sweeper.

Patricia Whitely, UM vice president for student affairs, said in an e-mail that the school has been in constant contact with Milov's family.

``The University of Miami and the UM Miller School of Medicine will continue to offer any support needed by the family,'' she wrote. ``Bianca continues to make slow progress.''

After an investigation of the accident, Santiesteban was charged last week with failure to yield to a pedestrian, a civil traffic infraction. He has been a street sweeper operator with Coral Gables since July 2006.
