CORAL GABLES: `SIX OPERAS IN 60 MINUTES'

The Frost Opera Theater at the University of Miami will present Six Operas in Sixty Minutes at 8 p.m. Oct. 13 in the Maurice Gusman Concert Hall, 1314 Miller Dr.

The six composers, five University of Miami faculty members and one alumnus, will each perform a 10-minute opera back-to-back.

FOR LA DORADA

The American Academy of Hospitality Services has bestowed its top award on La Dorada.

La Dorada, at 177 Giralda Ave., is the first Spanish restaurant in the country and the second in the world to win the International Five Star Diamond Award.

The academy bestows the award annually to five-star hotels, restaurants, chefs, airlines, cruise lines and products worldwide.

La Dorada, which opened in 1996, serves Mediterranean/Spanish-style cuisine.

ART NIGHT

It's time for First Friday Art Night.

The event is 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Friday, showcasing original art and sculptures in the breezeway between Tarpon Bend and The Sports Exchange at 65 Miracle Mile.

This month's event will highlight works by award-winning local artist Mike Thompson, as well as artists Marcie Ziv, Fred Hunt, Theresa Calluori, Audrey Scott and Anna Maria Windisch.

The Coral Gables Community Foundation is seeking items for the silent auction at its masquerade ball next month.

Any items donated are tax deductible. Funds raised go toward financing programs like CoralGables@ Home, a membership program that helps seniors live independently in their homes.

FOR HALLOWEEN

The Alhambra Orchestra and the Greater Miami Youth Symphony will kick off their 2009-2010 concert seasons with a free Halloween-themed concert.

Conductors Alfred Gershfeld and Huifang Chen will lead the ensembles as they perform pieces from The Phantom of the Opera, Night on Bald Mountain, Firebird Suite, Danse Macabre and more.

Listeners are invited to come in costume.

The concert is at 4 p.m. Oct. 25 at Ransom-Everglades School, 3575 Main Hwy., Coconut Grove.
