What will fill the giant vacancy left by Circuit City at the Greenery Mall?
A supermarket can now join the list of possibilities.
The Kendall Community Council, by a 4-2 vote, nixed a mall restriction that prohibited supermarkets. The decision came Wednesday night after four hours of debate.
Council member Peggy Brodeur put forth the final compromise that will allow a supermarket to come in -- with these restrictions:
Store hours will be limited to 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
Shopping carts will have locks.
It must have landscaping on the west and south property line, including tall trees and shrubs.
Deliveries from tractor-trailers will be allowed only from 6 to 9 a.m.
A crossing guard must be provided by loading docks during school hours.
The mall's neighbors are concerned about adding more traffic and noise to the area.
``Let me make something clear: We want them to do well. We want them to thrive,'' said Elizabeth Hubbart, secretary of the Tara home owners association, an adjacent community. ``But it doesn't make sense for that area, and it is going to hurt everyone who lives there.''
Council Chairman Elliott N. Zack and council member Angela Vazquez voted against the measure. Jose I. Valdes was absent. Even those who voted to allow a supermarket struggled with the decision.
``This was an application I was on the line with,'' council member Jorge Garciga said. ``I thought Brodeur was very clear when she said both sides needed to come together.''
Jackie Ford, who lives at Tara Homes, called the vote ``bittersweet.''
Her main concern was with the safety of children walking past the loading docks to Kenwood Elementary School.
``I wasn't happy about it, but I guess I have to live with it,'' Ford said.
