G. HOLMES BRADDOCK HIGH SCHOOL

Students at G. Holmes Braddock High School will hold car wash to help family of former student

Monday is a teacher's workday, but some students at G. Holmes Braddock High School are going to school anyway -- to help the family of a slain alumnus.

Members of the school's debate team and the Naval Junior ROTC unit will have a car wash at the school to raise funds for the family of 18-year-old Jaclyn Elisse Torrealba, who was killed last week by a man who later identified himself as her boyfriend, according to police.

Torrealba, known as Jackie to her friends, graduated from Braddock in June and had just started taking classes at Florida International University.

The recent graduate had been on Braddock's debate team, in addition to other school activities.

Johnny Martinez, a science teacher and ROTC instructor at the school, said the ROTC unit was helping with the car wash because it was the largest club at the school, with about 200 members.

He said the money would help the family cover the expenses of the funeral, which has not yet been set.

Juan Carlos Portieles, 30, was charged Monday with second-degree murder.

According to a Miami-Dade police arrest affidavit, Portieles and Torrealba got into a heated argument along a Southwest Miami-Dade County road the morning of Oct. 11.

Portieles reportedly began beating and choking Torrealba until she stopped moving.

Hours later, Portieles -- also known as DJ Seasunz -- went to the police station and turned himself in.

The car wash will be held from 8:55 a.m. to 3:55 p.m. at the school, 3601 SW 147th Ave.
