HOMESTEAD
Seminole author to speak at Homestead Library
Miami Herald Staff Report
It would be fair to consider Moses Jumper Jr. a Renaissance Man.
He owns a 500-herd of cattle on Big Cypress. He's also a storyteller, poet, children's book writer, an athlete and recreation director for his Seminole Tribe.
Jumper, who lives on the Seminole Big Cypress Reservation in Hendry County, will speak to the Monday Lunch Time Lecture at noon at the Homestead Branch Library, 700 N. Homestead Blvd.
Jumper, whose Seminole nickname is ''Big Shot,'' is a fourth-generation cattleman.
He wrote a book of poetry, Echoes in the Wind. He dedicated it to his grandmother, Ada Tiger, of the Snake Clan ``for her insight and love for her family, her people and the spiritual respect she showed God and all His Creation.''
Jumper also co-authored a biography for children, Osceola: Patriot and Warrior.
Former Seminole Tribe Chairman James E. Billie said Jumper is a rare talent.
''Translating and interpreting what you hear, see and feel into a poem form is a gift given only to a few,'' Billie said. ``Moses Jumper, Jr. is such a person.''
His appearance Monday is free.
The lecture series is named for the late Bea Peskoe, an advocate for education, culture and justice.
The Bea Peskoe Lunchtime Lecture series is made possible with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council and the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.
The series is presented by the Homestead Center for the Arts.
