Miami Beach voters to return to polls for runoff
The Miami Beach City Commission Group 2 and Group 3 seats are up for grabs Tuesday, when voters return to the polls to vote in a runoff election.
In the race to claim the seat of term-limited Commissioner Saul Gross, insurance executive Jorge Exposito and mergers and acquisitions attorney Maria Mayer are on the ballot.
In the race to take the seat of outgoing Commissioner Victor Diaz Jr., former commissioner Michael Góngora is running against transportation activist Gabrielle Redfern.
Tuesday's runoff, which is expected to cost about $200,000 according to City Clerk Robert Parcher, was needed for both races because no candidate secured more than 50 percent of the vote in the Nov. 3 election.
According to figures on Miami-Dade County's website, Exposito and Mayer both won about 38 percent, with Exposito leading by about 40 votes. In the Group 3 race, Góngora garnered about 42 percent of the vote. A recount was needed before Redfern was declared Góngora's opponent in the runoff.
