As Miami-Dade prepares for a busy weekend, a road agency has ordered the nighttime closures of travel lanes on stretches of two major expressways: Interstate I-195 — the Julia Tuttle Causeway that links Miami Beach to the mainland — and Interstate 95.
Perhaps the most significant of the two is the one involving the westbound lanes of I-195, which will be closed every weeknight next week for installation of signage structures, sign panels and the removal of an existing signage structure.
The closure will begin Monday at the tail end of the Presidents’ Day Weekend that features the five-day Miami International Boat Show starting Thursday and Valentine’s Day Saturday.
The I-195 westbound lanes will be closed each night Monday through Friday next week from midnight to 5:30 a.m. The suggested alternate route is the MacArthur Causeway.
The I-95 nighttime closures involve all northbound lanes south of Northwest 33rdStreet, for installation of a new signage structure, sign panels and removal of the existing signage structure Tuesday through Friday this week from midnight to 5:30 a.m. The northbound I-95 detour begins at I-395, where drivers should take the off ramp to Biscayne Boulevard, then continue northbound on Biscayne Boulevard and then proceed onto the ramp to State Road 112 and follow the signs to I-95 northbound.
The closures are being carried out by the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) which owns the sign panels and structures being replaced.
Mario Diaz, an MDX spokesman, said officials chose to implement the closures because they do not anticipate any disruption to scheduled events.
“There is light traffic on the roads at those times,” said Diaz.
