A teenager was electrocuted in Miami Monday evening when he jumped a fence into an electrical grid.
Jesus Meneses was playing basketball at Kinloch Park at Northwest 47th Avenue and 4th Terrace when he hopped the fence of an FPL substation to retrieve a ball, according to his friends.
Witnesses described hearing a loud noise and seeing flashing lights and smoke.
“His body was smoking and then his clothes caught on fire,” friend Andy Gonzalez said.
Never miss a local story.
When firefighters arrived, the grid was still energized. Rescue workers had to wait for FPL to arrive and shut down the power so they could safely retrieve the body.
FPL released a statement on Monday night: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. FPL personnel are on the scene cooperating with local law enforcement who are working to determine what happened.”
According to FPL, 1,100 customers were affected due to the incident but all power had been restored by 8 p.m.
