Police arrested and charged Gustavo Sanchez in connection with a fatal hit-and-run in Little Haiti early Saturday morning.
The incident happened early Saturday morning — sometime around 5 a.m., according to police — near Northwest 5th Avenue and 54th Street. A woman, who police have not identified, was crossing 54th Street when she was hit by a 1987 white Oldsmobile driven by Sanchez at a high rate of speed, according to police. The victim was dragged 85 feet before the driver sped away from the scene.
Sanchez, 29, of Miami, was later stopped at Northeast 15th Avenue and 163rd Street, after a Miami-Dade officer noticed heavy damage to the car’s front windshield. When asked by the officer if he had struck anything with his vehicle, Sanchez replied that he was just on his way home.
In its arrest report, police charged Sanchez with DUI manslaughter and leaving the scene of a fatal crash. The woman killed was pronounced dead at the scene.
