Cristina Pla-Guzman, drama instructor at Monsignor Edward Pace High School, received the 2016 Kennedy Center and Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Award from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
The award recognizes teachers and their impact on the lives of their students. Fourteen teachers were selected and showcased on the center’s website. Awards are granted in honor of composer-lyricist Sondheim’s 86th birthday.
Pla-Guzman was nominated by her former student Elexa Suarez, class of 2015, and will receive a $10,000 grant.

Twelve Miami Palmetto High School students were designated as 2016 National Merit Finalists. Students were selected based on their PSAT scores.
Selected finalists include Benjamin Bao, Kayla Buttafuoco, Logan Kraus, Jeffrey Li, Rosalie Luo, Jaewon Moon, Ross Rosen, Juan Villacreces, Nathan Wasserman, William Yang, Bo You and Claire Zuo.
WESTMINSTER CHRISTIAN SCHOOL
Ian Poveda of Westminster Christian School earned the People’s Choice Award in the 2016 National Geographic Student Photo Contest.
Students were required to submit photos that showed what adventure meant to them. Ian’s photo — called Look Up! — was taken during a family vacation in downtown Boston and earned 25 percent of votes.
Each photo included a 100-word essay.
Ian is also president of the junior class at Westminster, and founded the photography club.
MIAMI CORAL PARK HIGH SCHOOL
For the seventh year, the Spanish team at Miami Coral Park High School recently placed first in Division Two of the 60 annual Florida State Spanish Competition.
Students competed in Impromptu, Declamation and Dramatic Presentation categories. Participants included Claudia Aviles, Susana Ceballos, Patricia García, Adrian Gonzalez, Marcos Gonzalez, Fabio Gonzalez, Carolina Guillen, Guamay Martell, Gilsa Morlote, Stephany Pereira, Stephany Ramirez, Maria Rodriguez, Laura Suarez, Luis Toledo, Gabriela Torres and Elianny Varela.
