Olga Rocio Rivas of Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart won third place in the national Celebrate America Fifth Grade Creative Writing Contest, a contest that encourages students to express the reasons they are glad America is a nation of immigrants.
Olga placed first in the regional contest with her piece entitled “America Believes,” which gained her access to compete in the national competition. Her peers, Torivia Castro and Alexandra Dominguez, placed second and third in the regional competition.
A flag will be flown over the U.S. Capitol in honor of Olga and her piece will be published in Skipping Stones Magazine.

The Homestead South Dade Kiwanis Foundation recently held a dinner in Florida City to honor 23 scholarship recipients for 2015. Each student received a $1,000 scholarship and was recognized for academic excellence and their commitment to community service.
The winners included: Hanna Bearham, Aubrey Hoffman, Agustina Quesada and Phylicia Fraser of Coral Reef High School; Christopher Guibernau and Marisa Stephens of TERRA Environmental Research Institute; Monica Bermudez, Andrea Bueno, Erin Burrichter, Jaclyn Gilbert, Joseph Maura, Raymond McLaughlin, Devin Mead, John Messenger Jr., Stephanie Radlein, Darlin Ramirez and Natalie Rosas of South Dade High School; Charisma Jackson of Robert Morgan High School; Veronica Ibarra, Jennifer Quinones and Fiona Romney of MAST Medical Academy; Madison Yurubi of Palmetto High School; and Jericho Mowry of Princeton Christian School.
Monsignor Edward Pace High School
Alumni, faculty, staff and students recently gathered at Monsignor Edward Pace High School for the 2015 Pace Gallery Art Show, which includes art work from students and alumni.
Marcel Navarro, lead visual arts instructor, organized the art show and featured about 50 pieces of from 15 students and two alumni.
Pinecrest Elementary School
First-grade instructor Linda Fondas-Lantieigne of Pinecrest Elementary School decided to retire this year and wanted to donate her classroom book collection to schools throughout South Miami-Dade with students who are underprivileged. With the help of Reed McMaster, of Palmetto High School, more than 1,000 books were packed into boxes and sent to schools.
To help local schools in the community, there is a collection box in the Pinecrest Community Center that accepts donations of used books.
Higher Standards Tutorial
Jeffrey Rothkopf, director of Higher Standards Tutorial, we host a free SAT/PSAT practice test and strategy workshop for students and their parents at 9:30 am. and 1:45 pm. July 12 at Best Western, 8560 SW 124th Ave., in Miami.
To participate, students must reserve their seats by sending their names, their parent’s names, their current schools and grade levels, valid email addresses and phone numbers to firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 305-234-2565. Students should bring calculators, pencils, and copies of their previous SAT/PSAT scores.
