Tax-free school supply shopping
Friday, Aug. 4 - Sunday, Aug. 6
What: Shoppers can buy school supplies without paying state sales tax. Eligible items include clothing and shoes that cost $60 or less; certain school supplies under $15 each; and computers, tablets and computer-related accessories including printers and headphones that cost $750 or less. Binders, calculators, transparent tape, colored pencils, crayons, construction paper, lunch boxes, notebook paper and scissors can all be purchased tax free.

Free school supplies for needy families
Sunday, Aug. 6
What: Toys for Kids Miami is giving away school supplies, fresh food and 3,000 backpacks at a free event that includes games and music. Representatives from local universities will also be there to give students information about college scholarships.

Saturday, Aug. 12
What: Florida Technical College is hosting a free backpack and school supply giveaway. Kids can get their fingerprints taken by Miami-Dade police and family members of all ages can get their vital signs checked.

What: Project Ready For School is giving away school supplies, backpacks, uniforms, socks, underwear and books to students at Frances S. Tucker Elementary. The event includes activities for kids and information for families from The Children’s Trust. Each family will also get a bag of food from Feeding South Florida.
Where: Frances S. Tucker Elementary in Coconut Grove at 3500 Douglas Rd. (The event is only for Frances Tucker students.)

What: Operation Homefront Back-to-School Brigade® is giving away hundreds of backpacks and school supplies to the families of wounded soldiers as well as active-duty, Guard and Reserve military personnel. Families need to register at www.operationhomefront.org/event/list by Aug. 10 in order to qualify.
Where: Events will be held at Williams Army Reserve Center in Miami and at Homestead Air Reserve Base

Saturday, Sept. 9
What: The Children’s Trust is hosting its annual Family Expo, a free event featuring booths with information about after-school activities, low-cost health insurance, nutrition and services for children with special needs. Kids will also get free school supplies and backpacks and can enjoy face painting, magicians and other entertainment.
Where: Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition Center (access to the fairgrounds is off Coral Way on both 112th and 109th Avenues)

Supplies for teachers
What: Teachers can stock up on supplies at The Education Fund’s Ocean Bank Center for Educational Materials, a free school supply warehouse. Teachers need to sign up online to schedule a visit. Art teachers can participate in workshops to get ideas on how to use the materials from the warehouse in their lessons.
Donate to needy families
What: The Doral Chamber of Commerce is hosting a backpack and school supply drive.
Where: Drop off school supplies at any Doral TotalBank.
When: Supplies will be collected until Aug. 10. A final collection day celebration with food and drinks will be held on Aug. 10 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at 9690 NW 41st St. in Doral.

What: Branches is hosting a fundraiser to pay for school supplies for low-income families who participate in the organization’s youth programs. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Admission includes food and drinks. Guests will have the opportunity to put together a backpack and write a note of encouragement for a student.
Where: The Lennar Foundation Medical Center in Coral Gables at 5555 Ponce De Leon Blvd.
