A 17-year-old student at Miami Northwestern High was shot and killed this week while standing on the street.
“He was a good kid, you know. I guess he was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said David Young who knew the victim. “You’d see him at school. He always had a smile on his face, respectful and everything.”
Miami police said Maurice Harris was standing outside when he was gunned down around 6:30 p.m. Monday near Northwest 54th Street and 13th Avenue.
Rescue crews took Harris to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he died, two weeks before his 18th birthday.
The motive is still under investigation.
“There’s no explanation for it. I pray everything gets better for his family, friends, everybody who was close to him,” Young said.
Amid the investigation, Miami-Dade Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho mourned the loss of another young person.
“The sanctity of young life has been violated once again and our hearts bleed,” he said. “We shed tears of pain and anguish not only for this child but for the many of our kids who have lost their lives.”
Anyone with information in the case is urged to call Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at 305-471- TIPS.
