A full lineup of summer programs and events is set to invade the Shops at Sunset Place.
The programs include a Sunday farmers market, interactive art installation, and store openings.
The farmers market is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Sunday at the Sunset Drive entry plaza and features local vendors offering organic produce, baked goods, jams, jellies and more.
The mall also commissioned University of Miami graduate art student Izia Lindsay to create a large-scale installation at the entry plaza. Lindsay will work through June and July, converting a series of columns into a canvas for abstract landscapes of South Florida’s native wildlife.
Never miss a local story.
“I’m honored to have the opportunity to create a work of art for the South Miami community that has welcomed me and become my second home,” said Lindsay, who is originally from Trinidad. “I look forward to engaging with locals as I make the Shops at Sunset Place plaza my canvas this summer to create an art installation that reflects the landscapes and wildlife native to South Florida.”
From 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 25, families can partake in a day of music, shopping, games, and arts and crafts at summer recess, sponsored by GameTime.
“We’ve said all along that we are going to transform Sunset Place into South Miami’s living room, and there’s no better time than the present to begin,” said Vicki Baisden, general manager of the Shops at Sunset Place. “Our weekly farmers market, new art features and upcoming events will give the community reason to visit and keep coming back for more this summer.”
A back to school send-off is planned from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 6 and will be a tax-free weekend, saving shoppers money for back-to-school supplies. Tea & Poets, a full-service tea bar featuring live performances by local poets and musicians is planned to open at Sunset Place. Nova Teas, an artisanal, family-owned company that imports and blends premium whole-leaf loose tea, opened recently. Modastyle, a swim and resort-wear boutique for men, women, and children, and Edgelook, offering the latest fashions and unique accessories, are also planned to open at the Shops.
All events are free and open to the public. Sunset Place’s parking promotion is extended through the summer. Visitors have their first hour free at the Sunset Place parking garage from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. They will also get a 50 percent discount on their first two hours of parking during weekends.
“Families are always looking for activities to enjoy over the summer, so we’ve developed a series of events called ‘Summer Recess’ at the Shops at Sunset Place that is sure to entertain adults and children alike — from our Sunday farmers market to our interactive art installation,” said Alex Schreer, marketing director for Grass River Property, which owns the Shops at Sunset Place in partnership with Federal Realty and the Comras Company. “We’ve seen how art transforms communities, and we’re excited to have one of our own local art students create a unique art installation that visitors to our center and the overall South Miami community will be able to watch come to life.”
