The heart of Palmetto Bay will experience heavy traffic starting Oct. 5 for construction that is expected to relieve flooding.
Coral Reef Drive — Southwest 152nd Street along 80th, 82nd, and 83rd avenues — will be closed and detour signs will redirect traffic. The project is scheduled to be finished in mid-December, officials say.
“It will cause traffic,” Mayor Eugene Flinn said. “This is one of those things where I really ask my fellow residents to be patient and understand that they will see some serious construction ugly. It’s a short-term, intense disruption for a long-term gain.”
The project has taken years to be approved by Miami-Dade County, which finally approved construction of drainage improvements, a project that will cost about $246,000.
Never miss a local story.
City staff is hoping that the closure will help alleviate the drainage problems in the area, which has caused many headaches.
“We’ve got to get the stormwater off the street and properly managed,” Flinn said. “We recently had a homeowner where water was going into the garage, poor guy. We cannot be fearing rain or a heavy storm. That’s what the goal is. We need to feel confident that we don’t have to sandbag our house.”
Coral Reef Drive shall remain open during the morning rush hour, allowing scheduled road work to take place between 9:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Crews will also be working Saturdays.
The construction will be completed in three phases:
▪ Phase 1 — Southwest 152nd Street from Southwest 82nd to 83rd avenues.
Road Closure: 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Southwest 152nd Street eastbound and westbound from Southwest 82nd to 83rd avenues.
Intersection of Southwest 152nd Street and Southwest 82nd Avenue open to vehicular traffic traveling north and south on Southwest 82nd Avenue, and east of Southwest 82nd Avenue on Southwest 152nd Street daily during phase 1.
▪ Phase 2 — Southwest 152nd Street from Southwest 80th to 82nd avenues.
Road Closure: 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Southwest 152nd Street closed eastbound and westbound from Southwest 80th to 82nd avenues.
Intersection of Southwest 152nd Street and Southwest 82nd Avenue open to vehicular traffic traveling north and south on Southwest 82nd Avenue, and west of Southwest 82nd Avenue on Southwest 152nd Street daily during phase 2.
▪ Phase 3 — Intersection of Southwest 152nd Street and Southwest 82nd Avenue.
Road Closure: Proposed work to be scheduled on a Saturday with complete closure of intersection. If intersection needs to be closed on a weekday, it will be closed from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during phase 3, but it is expected that the work in phase 3 will be completed in a two-day time frame.
“Our biggest concern is the morning commute and school drop-off,” Flinn said. “Plan accordingly and realize the significance for this.”
