Five years after John Agudelo, 49, was ambushed and shot dead outside his Miami Springs home, police hope that sharing a key clue may help catch the killer.
“He was shot several times,” said Miami-Dade Detective Javier Pineda, who along with Miami-Dade Crimes Stoppers created a video to help solve the crime.
Police believe that the suspect, or suspects, knew Agudelo and had special knowledge of the layout of his apartment complex at 57 Esplanade Dr. In particular, the spring-loaded gate was known to clank loudly upon closing.
People familiar with the complex, located between an elementary school and the Miami River, are careful not to let the gate bang shut — especially when neighbors are asleep.
According to police, Agudelo was shot “multiple times” around 6 a.m. Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, after he locked his door and walked toward the gate. However, no one heard the gate close.
“We believe that whoever is the person or persons responsible for this knew the victim and knew his routine to the point that, that gate that you just mentioned it does make a loud noise when it opens and it closes,” Pineda said. “That wasn’t heard by any of the neighbors at that time.”
Pineda was well liked and volunteered with the Alcoholics Anonymous a few blocks from his home. He helped many people “beat addiction to drugs and alcohol,” police said.
