Budget season is upon us and while the Town Council is set to vote on a final budget on Sept. 28, staff has been working year round to ensure that we have an effective and efficient product. For starters, Miami Lakes boasts the fifth lowest millage rate (property taxes) in Miami-Dade County, not to mention one of the lowest per capita rates among Florida’s 411 municipalities.
Our general fund revenues total $16,307,201. Out of that amount, only $3,422,386, or 20.9%, is collected directly from Miami Lakes homeowners in the form of property taxes (single family and condominiums). The majority of our general revenue is derived from commercial and multi-family ad valorem taxes, half cent sales tax, communications service tax, state revenue sharing, franchise fees, utility services tax and licenses/permits.
Our largest expenditure is our town police department, which represents 45.04% of our budget at $7,344,504. The remaining $8,962,697 is utilized for neighborhood services/planning, building department, community and leisure services, special events committees, public works, and other departments that help ensure that Miami Lakes continues growing beautifully.
The Miami Lakes Capital Improvement projects are also on schedule. In the very near future, we will be cutting the ribbon at the newly built East Park Youth Center and Miami Lakes Optimist Clubhouse. Not to mention the several upcoming and current roadway and drainage improvement projects in West Lakes, Lake Martha, Lake Sarah/Lake Adele and Royal Oaks. The highly anticipated Miami Lakes Dog Park is also scheduled to be finalized in early 2016.

While the future in Miami Lakes is bright, we don’t fail to realize that there are many challenges ahead. We’ve placed hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars into a non-departmental line item to help mitigate the Pizzi v. Town of Miami Lakes lawsuit. Also, several revenue sources might be disappearing in the future due to changes in technology and state law.
