The purchase of police vehicles was at hot topic item at Wednesday’s city commission meeting in Opa-locka.
The main item
After some debate, the commission unanimously passed a resolution authorizing the city manager to enter into a vehicle lease agreement with ACME Auto Leasing.
The original resolution called for 33 vehicles to be leased at a price of about $306,000; however, as a cost-saving measure, the commission reduced that number to 19 marked vehicles, a move that saved the city about $160,000 according to Interim City Manager David Chiverton.
The lease agreement comes with an option to buy.
▪ Liquor Stores: Mayor Myra Taylor sponsored an ordinance that would impose a moratorium on issuing business tax receipts for liquor stores in the city. The council agreed, with a unanimous vote. During the meeting Taylor called liquor stores “seedbeds of crime” within the community.
