Miami Beach police Capt. Alex Carullo was busted down to a lieutenant on Monday, the new police chief announced in a department-wide email.
Chief Dan Oates provided no explanation for his decision.
“Per Chief Oates, due to this being a personnel matter there will be no comment at this time,” police spokesman Sgt. Bobby Hernandez wrote to the Miami Herald in an email.
The chief’s email announced Deputy Chief John Buhrmaster will take over command of the Criminal Investigation Unit, which Carullo previously ran. Buhrmaster will also continue to perform his duties as deputy chief, Oates’ email said.
Buhrmaster will fill the role of deputy chief until August, when Lauretta Hill assumes the position. Oates named Hill as deputy chief in late June. She will become the city’s first black deputy chief and its highest-ranking black officer. Hill last served as deputy police chief of Arlington, Texas.
Buhrmaster will become part of the senior command staff, Oates has said.
Oates became top cop in Miami Beach in last month. He was previously chief in Aurora, Colo. and is also a New York Police Department veteran.
