Hit-and-run crash kills pedestrian in South Beach

A South Beach driver struck and killed a pedestrian Saturday and sped away without a trace, according to police.
The victim, whose identity police did not reveal other than to say they believed he was middle-age and homeless, was hit in the westbound lanes of Fifth Street between Lenox and Michigan avenues.
His red umbrella, a shoe and other personal belongings remained at the crash site hours after the incident, which investigators said happened sometime before 3:30 a.m.
Police re-opened that stretch of Fifth Street before noon on Saturday. Investigators said no witnesses have come forward, and they did not have a description of the suspect’s vehicle.
