A gas leak on the edge of Little Havana caused the evacuation of a Lincoln-Marti preschool Monday afternoon.
Miami Fire Rescue Captain Ignatius Carroll said construction equipment near Southwest First Street and Southwest Eighth Avenue hit a 4-inch gas line causing a rupture around 1 p.m. The gas flowed west toward the Lincoln-Marti preschool, 949 SW First Street, where school officials evacuated the 135 kids, who ranged from infancy to 4 years old.
Teco Gas arrived to cap the leak with Miami Fire Rescue’s Hazmat team monitoring the air quality in case a second day care nearby needs to be evacuated. Drivers should steer clear of the intersection until 3:30 p.m. at least.
